If you’re reading this inaugural post (and thank you if you are!), you’re probably wondering what Punk Views on Social Media is, and why you should read yet another social media blog.
The answer to the second question is simple enough – we’re going to try damn hard to not be just another social media blog. And that ties into the answer to the first question.
When social media (or the popular form of social media as most folks know it) first hit the scene, it was a breath of fresh air.
For the first time in a long time (perhaps ever?), it changed the way many people interacted online.
With each other, with peers, with brands.
No longer did we have to try and reach someone by email, call or visit – now we had a myriad of tools at our disposal to help us connect faster, and better.
We could speak with brands, and they could speak with us. We could have a voice when before we simply had ears, or eyes.
Simply put, social media was the kind of thing we’d been looking for – it made everyone important (in a good way).
But then, some of the wheels started coming off. Some voices grew louder than others, and not always in a good way. Some used the channels of social media to mask business acumen, research and other solid business practices in favour of a quick buck, and to hell with the consequences.
Brands became scared to participate, and the hype machine went into overdrive as people took advantage of the understandable fears around this still-new medium.
We’d like to try and counter that.
The bloggers at Punk Views on Social Media offer a collective experience from being in the social media trenches, just like you. We’re exactly like you – we love social media, but fear for what it’s becoming. Hence the blog.
We want to offer somewhere to counter the hyperbole, the wild claims, and the dangerous advice. But we don’t want to be bullies- we will never intentionally call out a person if we can help it. Instead, we’ll question their ideas and offer alternatives – personal attacks are a no-no. Instead, we just want to extend the conversation and get people thinking about what’s on offer.
We also want to highlight the great that people are doing, and break down the silos that are starting to appear in this supposed least-silo’d medium that is social media.
Simply put, we just want everyone to have fun again in social media, and know that you don’t have to take everything for gospel just because a particular corner said it.
Hopefully that makes sense, and hopefully it’s something you believe in too. If so, we’re going to have a lot of fun together.
Let the punking begin.
